Information adds to the representation of something. Noise adds to the representation of something else. This seminal insight is Claude Shannon's. Anyone building an information system must grasp it to succeed.

When I was a systems integrator a long time ago I thought I'd publish a desk calendar with a new project management aphorism for every day of the year. But it turned out I only knew 148 things worth saying about project management. A friend suggested I fill in the blanks with recipes and jokes. That was before we knew about cat and dog photos. Does anyone even know what a desk calendar is anymore?
